ARCHIVED - University of Valencia leads programme to support Afghan women
The university on the Costa Blanca wants to incorporate female Afghan students and professors into Spanish faculties
The Universitat de València (UV) is working on the development of a support programme for Afghan women, the objective of which is to allow female students and professors from Afghanistan to teach and study in Spanish universities.
To try to achieve this, the UV is appealing to the university community and the Spanish authorities to avoid "the loss of training opportunities " after the Taliban troops seize power in Afghanistan, on the premise that education is "the most powerful lever for equal rights for women".
The support program would be established within the "commitment to the right of asylum for humanitarian reasons and the protection of the rights of the most vulnerable people", and would require the collaboration of local, regional and state authorities to ensure the Afghan women's residence, according to the UV.
Led by the Faculty of Law and the Institute of Human Rights (IDH), a team of professors and university directors have already made contact with and put forward the proposal to other universities, the Spanish government, and president of the Valencian regional government, Ximo Puig.
Thirty-three Afghan refugees are currently being temporarily housed in a shelter at the neighbouring Region of Murcia as part of a mission by the EU and NAT to evacuate those who collaborated with the Spanish government over the last two decades.
