ARCHIVED - Torrevieja Hospital back in public management with 121 new staff
The Valencian regional government has regained direct control of Torrevieja Hospital from management company Ribera Salud.
There have been a number of disputes and protests in the run up to the hand-over of control to the Valencia government on October 15, most recently over the termination of 200 temporary workers' contracts by the private management firm, Ribera Salud, which led to a reported "strip back of resources", and closure of wards.
So, to address the shortage, the Ministry of Health has reinforced Torrevieja Heath Department with 121 health professionals in the first week of a return to normal healthcare activity, which "will be expanded further over the coming days".
"Vacant posts are being covered according to the needs detected within the different fields of medicine," explained manager of the health department, Pilar Santos.
In total, 12 primary care doctors, 23 professionals in non-surgical specialities (including paediatrics, psychology, oncology, psychiatry and radiodiagnosis), 46 nurses, 17 auxiliary nursing care technicians, 10 administrative assistants and 12 orderlies have been incorporated into the healthcare team.
However, long-term, the General Directorate of Human Resources has created 1,888 jobs across the whole of the health department, which covers a populaton of more than 6,000 people. A large portion of these workers, 1,079, who were directly employed by Ribera Salud, have been replaced.
The first appointments to the management team, headed by Pilar Santos, have also been made, with a new director of nursing and director of primary care.
General director of human resources, Carmen López, stressed that there are still vacancies across the different departments, and added: "This opens a new window of opportunity for employment in the public health sector in the Vega Baja".
