ARCHIVED - Still no movement on rail link with Alicante-Elche Airport two years after feasibility study was approved
The Valencia Government approved a study into the proposed connection two years ago

The lack of a railway connection between the Alicante-Elche airport and the city of Alicante remains a contentious topic and despite the Valencia Government allocating 50,000 euros for a feasibility study two years ago, no progress has been made.
Last year, during a debate in the Deputies Congress, the political party Compromís requested that the regional Ministry of Transport carry out the Torrellano project, which includes a bypass and airport connection, as soon as possible.
But despite the project having been processed and approved, work on the infrastructure between the airport and Alicante city has still not been carried out.
Alicante-Elche Airport's new terminal opened in March 2011, with a huge plot of land allocated for a railway station together with an Alicante TRAM stop. But since then, despite numerous requests for updates from political parties and various business unions, there is still no real word on how the project is progressing, if at all.
The only government response on April 21 has shed no further light on the airport connection, simply stating that "the complementary studies of the Torrellano bypass are still being drafted, in a development phase that does not allow for an adequate presentation".
The plan would see the elimination of the railway route along the south coast of Alicante: one of the commitments made since 2003, when the agreement was signed for the execution of the works for the arrival of the AVE (high-speed train) to Alicante.
Meanwhile, there is still no clarification of whether the government is planning to tackle the electrification and change of track gauge on the Alicante-San Isidro line, which, in practice, would mean the consolidation of its route along the coast.
