ARCHIVED - Replica of historic Nao Victoria to dock in Denia: October 15 to 17
The original vessel was the first ship to circumnavigate the world and visitors in the Marina Alta area can take a peek inside
Nao Victoria, a replica of the first ship to circumnavigate the world in the 16th Century will dock at Denia's Marina and Toursit Port next week for three days, and members of the public can jump onboard to have a look around.
The original vessel completed the greatest maritime feat of all times, commanded by Juan Sebastian Elcano, when it left Seville in 1519 and returned to the same city in 1522, after sailing around the globe for the first time in history.
The impressive replica was originally built for the Universal Exhibition in Seville (1992), its home port, by the Nao Victoria Foundation, a non-profit which specialises in promoting and spreading historical events supported by the construction of historical ships (the Nao Victoria, El Galeón and the Nao Santa María) that are now sailed throughout the world’s ports.
Construction began in March 1991 in Isla Cristina (Huelva). Its designer and builder was Ignacio Fernández Vial, who, after an exhaustive historical study, faithfully traced its shapes and details, and for eight months, carpenters and engineers worked on its construction.
Once finished, the Nao Victoria was placed on display to the public in Seville in 1992, together with replicas of the Nao Santa María and the caravels Pinta and La Niña, Christopher Columbus' light sailing ships, and were visited by more than three million people.
Nao Victoria, which recently stopped off in Murcia's Cartagena, will remain docked in Denia from October !5 to 17, and can be toured from 10am to 8pm. Tickets are available at the entrance to the boat itself, or through the webiste fundacionnaovictoria.org.
The Nao Victoria Foundation is also responsible for restoring and returning the iconic Pascual Fores ship to its former glory, and following a European tour, the vessel will return to its home port in Torrevieja later this month.
