ARCHIVED - Prison for the British man who stabbed his wife to death in Orihuela
The 69-year-old has been jailed on Spain's Costa Blanca as investigations continue into the murder of his wife on Sunday March 26
A 69-year-old British man has been jailed as investigations continue into the fatal stabbing of his wife at their home in Lomas de Cabo Roig, Orihuela Costa, last Sunday.
Police are treating the suspected murder of the 64-year-old woman, also British and identified as Anne Marie, as an act of gender violence, the first of its kind this year in Alicante province.
The Guardia Civil was called to the expat couple's home by concerned neighbours who reported a disturbance in the early hours of Sunday March 26.
When officers arrived at the property just before 4am, they found the victim dead wih multiple visible stab wounds. Her husband was attempting to flee the scene.
He was apprehended and taken to Torrevieja hospital with a stab wound to his stomach and transferred to Vinalopó hospital, in Elche, where he underwent surgery.
Following a medical discharge, he appeared before the head of the Court of Violence against Women number 1 of Orihuela where he was imprisoned without bail on Thursday March 30.
The couple moved to Spain in 2017, and following his arrest, officers discovered the suspect was already in the system for alleged domestic violence crimes in 2019. However, the Guardia Civil dropped the case in 2020 when the now deceased victim failed to make a complaint.
A minute's silence was organised by Orihuela Council in Plaza del Carmen on Wednesday.
This is the first death due to sexist violence this year in Alicante province. The last fatality was a young woman from Alcoy in October 2022.
In the neighbouring province of Murcia, a British man was arrested in December of last year in connection with the suspected killing of his partner.
