ARCHIVED - British woman, 64, murdered by her husband in Orihuela Costa
This is the first case of gender violence resulting in death in Alicante province this year
A 69-year-old man has been arrested in Orihuela Costa trying to flee his home after his British wife was found dead. The suspected murder is being treated as an act of gender violence by police, the first of its kind this year in Alicante province.
A concerned neighbour called the Guardia Civil to report a disturbance in the early hours of Sunday morning, March 26, and officers arrived at the British couple’s home at 3.50am. When they entered, they found the 64-year-old woman dead with multiple visible stab wounds and discovered her husband trying to flee the scene.
He was quickly apprehended by police and transferred to Torrevieja hospital, reportedly having suffered a stab wound to the stomach himself.
Once he had been arrested, officers realised that the suspect was already in the system for alleged domestic violence crimes in 2019, but the case was dropped by the Guardia Civil in 2020 when the victim, his murdered wife, failed to make a complaint at the time.
The couple had lived in Spain since 2017, according to official sources.
While the investigation is ongoing, the Guardia Civil are leaning towards this being a crime of gender violence, government delegate in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, explained. If this proves to be the case, the City Council will decree several minutes of silence and order the flags to be flown at half mast in honour of the British victim.
This is the first fatality due to sexist violence this year in the province. The last death was a young woman from Alcoy in October last year.
In December of last year, another British male in his 60s was arrested for the suspected murder of his partner on the Camposol urbanisation in the neighbouring province of Murcia.
