ARCHIVED - Police shut down breeding farm for cockfights in Orihuela
The farm was found in a cave in the Vega Baja del Segura comarca, Alicante province.
Local Police in Orihuela have shut down a farm at the foot of the Sierra above Calle Miguel Hernandez where cockerels were being bred for fighting.
Accompanied by a vet, officers rescued at least 30 birds which are now being cared for at Orihuela's municipal animal protection centre.
Cockfighting is banned in Spain except in Andalucia and the Canary Islands, although the activity has reportedly virtually disappeared in both autonomous regions.
During fights, two roosters which are normally trained to be aggressive and often pumped with steroids, are pitted against each other in a ring, often fighting to the death.
Those responsible for the farm in Orihuela could face animal abuse charges, and under Spanish law, anyone found guilty of animal abuse can face up to a year in jail and up to a year and a half if the animal is killed.
