ARCHIVED - Benidorm improves peak tourist season access to the popular Levante area
The Town Hall in the Marina Baixa resort, Alicante province, wants to improve traffic "fluidity"
Benidorm Town Council has completed a series of measures to improve access and traffic fluidity in the popular Levante area during the peak tourist season, including changes in the direction of traffic, the timing of traffic lights and the creation of new lanes to improve the flow of vehicles.
The road traffic scheme began last year on Avenida Europa with the construction of an access from Calle Esperanto, a new link to Avenida del Mediterráneo and the installation of a permanent amber traffic light from Calle Ibiza "so that traffic flowed much better", explained Councillor for Mobility, José Ramón González de Zárate.
In addition, waiting times at traffic lights have been modified to give priority to vehicles.
"The bicycle lane in the centre of the road Europa Avenue, the new access from Europa to Calle Jaén Street, and the entrance to the Cultural Centre also help a lot as this is an area where there are many second homes, hotels and tourist flats and traffic flow increases by 8% in the summer," added González de Zárate.
In the latest phase of the improvements, an additional lane has now been created at the roundabout at the junction of avenidas Comunidad Valenciana and Comunidad Europea.
The lane was completed on Wednesday morning to cut traffic waiting times at one of the most important and busiest roads in the town.
Pavements have been repaired or replaced and new lighting and street furniture installed, along with the creation of accessible bus stops with a single platform.
"In short, we have completed important actions and measures to avoid traffic problems in an area that in the past has experienced many", added the councillor.
Last week it was revealed that the barrage of road traffic improvements that have been carried out in Benidorm over the last 18 months, including state-of-the-art pedestrian crossings, have helped slash speed levels by 28%.
