ARCHIVED - Alicante Red Cross has saved 423 victims from drowning this summer
Red Cross staff in Alicante also assisted beach-goers with less serious problems, such as jellyfish stings or minor cuts
The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) organization in Alicante, which collaborates with four Town Halls in the province, have reported 9,473 health interventions and 9,153 social service interventions so far this summer.
Members of the Red Cross, including lifeguards and medical professionals, have been present on 28 different beaches in Alicante this summer, in Xábia, Denia, Santa Pola and Guardamar del Segura.
Compared to last year, the organization has reported a 13 per cent increase in non-serious medical assistance requests, such as animal bites or stings, cuts, burns or sunstroke.
Meanwhile, 423 residents in total have had to be rescued by the Red Cross after reporting difficulties in the water, either while swimming, carrying out aquatic sporting activities or sailing. Of these 423 cases, 145 resulted in trips to the hospital.
The Red Cross organization reminds beach-goers to be especially careful in the water, as drownings are unfortunately a common occurrence during the summer months. Some municipalities in the region have introduced a pioneering drone project to prevent drownings this summer, with a woman in Guardamar being saved by the system last week.
In addition, the Maritime Rescue service of the Red Cross has carried out 200 intervention in total in the region of Valencia this year, of which 149 were in Alicante. This programme to assist boats or ships reporting difficulties at sea is carried out in collaboration with SASEMAR (State Society of Maritime Rescue) and operates out of the marine bases in Altea, Castellón, Denia, Santa Pola, Torrevieja and Valencia.
