ARCHIVED - Another mosquito plague hits residential areas near Torrevieja lagoon
For the fourth time this year urbanisations close to the salt lakes in the Vega Baja town have become overrun with mozzies
Humid conditions and heavy rain in recent weeks have left residents living on urbanisations close to Torrevieja lagoon reeling amid a fourth plague of mosquitos this year.
Back in June locals submitted a formal complaint to the Town Hall, and threatened to take further action if nothing was done about the pests, arguing that the overwhelming number of mosquitos was affecting their day-to-day lives, preventing them from sitting on their patios, going for walks or even hanging the washing out.
Now the pesky mozzies are back once again, attracted by the fertile breeding ground of the saltwater marshes leading to the relentless hatching of larvae, prompting more complaints from fed up locals.
The local council has been receiving complaints since the end of March when social media networks were awash with images of the infestation, and following heavy rainfall at the end of October, brought in Madrid-based firm, INTI, to fumigate dozens of areas in and around the lagoon and marshland.
It claims everything is being done to combat infestations, but continued unsettled weather and storms, with short periods of warmer and humid weather, have meant the battle is ongoing. In recent days, residents have taken to social media to complain that affected areas remain off limits due to the sheer volume of mosquitos despite a spraying campaign.
