ARCHIVED - Almost 13,000 people in Valencia region download EU digital green pass in 24 hours
The region was one of the first in Spain to begin issuing the Covid digital certificate across the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellon.
A total of 12,769 people in the Valencia region downloaded the new European Union Covid digital certificate in the first 24 hours of the document being made available on Monday, June 7.
Spain has given the responsibility of issuing the digital Covid 'green passes" to each of the 17 Autonomous Communities as international travel is gradually reactivated following the lifting of travel restrictions in many European countries
The certificate will allow free movement within the EU for three categories of travellers: those who can show a recent negative PCR test, those who have recently recovered from Covid and those who are fully vaccinated.
And in the first 24 hours, 11,833 vaccination certificates; 921 recovery certificates and 15 test certificates were issued across Alicante, Valencia and Castellon provinces within just 24 hours.
The region's health minister, Ana Barceló stressed that "while the Covid Digital Certificate facilitates circulation, it is not essential for travel".
"People who are waiting for their vaccination and need or want to travel can continue to exercise their right to free movement in Europe, always complying with the diagnostic tests and indications of the receiving country," she added.
The aim of the digital certificate is to streamline and 'fast track' entry and exit procedures between countries within the European Union and certificates are expected to be available in all EU Member States from July 1.
And they are issued free of charge in electronic or paper version on request, with proof of a medical SIP card.
To find out more about applying for a 'green' travel certificate, visit the regional government's coronavirus portal or contact your local health centre.
Holders of an EU Digital Covid Certificate should be exempt from restrictions on free movement within Europe, but it's advisable to still check travel requirements of each country before travelling.
