Almoradí has joined the growing band of municipalities adopting smart traffic management systems that allow authorities and traffic planners to gain valuable insights from real-time video data on how to optimise traffic flow and minimise accident risks.

The Town Hall has installed 60 cameras at various points in the municipality, essentially for traffic control but also to act as a deterrent to cut down on crime and improve public safety.

The move follows an initial investment of 127,000 euros, with plans to expand the coverage.

The cameras were up and running this week, and images can now be viewed in real time at the Local Police headquarters. "The aim of this investment in security is to improve traffic and prevent possible infractions that may be committed to achieve a safer Almoradí," explained town mayor, María Gómez during a presentation at the police station.

Some of the cameras read number plates to monitor the entry and exit of vehicles, others are strategically placed in streets to improve traffic management and detect possible criminal offences, and even to provide visual support for compliance with municipal ordinances, such as the correct disposal of rubbish.

"The main purpose of these security cameras is to improve life and coexistence in Almoradí, and the investment will continue to expand coverage to address issues such as speed control; these cameras are a great tool for the Local Police," added the mayor.

Head of Almoradí Local Police, Sergio Lozano, shared the mayor's sentiments and explained: "We are responsible for the management, signalling and regulation of traffic and these cameras will support a more modern and effective system for doing this, while adhering to the regulations of the Data Protection Act.

"By knowing the real traffic situation in the municipality through direct visualisation, we can actively try to prevent any insecure situations, increase our response capacity, and even dissuade possible criminal offences or unauthorised behaviour".
