ARCHIVED - Alicante Provincial Council to support local renewable energy community setups
The council is promoting the use of photovoltaic energy across Alicante province
Europe's new Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) sets a target of 32 per cent renewable energy by 2030, and is calling on communities to develop clean energy sources.
In line with this directive, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Diputación de Alicante (Alicante Provincial Council) has set up a grant scheme to promote the use of photovoltaic energy and encourage self-consumption of electricity through the establishment of local energy communities.
"At such a difficult time, the council has set up this grant program in order to help households and businesses to alleviate the huge rise in the price of electricity," explained the provincial deputy of environment, Miguel Angel Sanchez, though it's not clear how much money is available.
The focus will initially be on municipalities with smaller populations, offering financial support to cover the administrative and legal costs involved in creating renewable energy communities and self-consumption of renewable energy.
"This will assist in economic terms, but also environmentally since solar energy favours sustainable development and reduces carbon intensity as the sun is a renewable source, non-polluting and available throughout the planet," added Sanchez.
The overall aim is to try to ensure everybody in the province eventually has access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy, and to combat climate change and its effects.
