The wounded man has undergone emergency reconstructive surgery at Elda hospital in Alicante province
A Spanish man, aged 22, has undergone reconstructive surgery after accidentally shooting himself in the penis trying to conceal a gun in his underwear at a police checkpoint in Novelda.
The loaded gun went off just as the vehicle, with another male inside, approached police and the pair sped off in the early hours of October 23. The wounded man was soon admitted to Elda Hospital where he underwent a four hour operation, according to police sources.
The 22-year-old and a second man of the same age have since been arrested as alleged perpetrators of a crime of illegal possession of weapons and placed at the disposal of Novelda court. They were provisionally released pending trial.
It's not clear why the injured man was carrying a gun, but the same sources confirmed it was fired accidentally and he suffered serious injuries to his penis.
The investigation is ongoing.
