ARCHIVED - Alicante fruit thieves investigated over theft of three tonnes of avocados
The gang allegedly targeted farms in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province
Members of a gang which is believed to have stolen three tonnes of avocados from farms in the Marina Baixa have been arrested in La Nucia.
The fruit, worth on average 2.30 euros per kilo, was stolen to sell on illegally at markets in Alicante province, according to the Guardia Civil in Callosa d'en Sarrià, who shut down the operation after catching three people red-handed loading 150 kilos of avocados stolen from a producer in La Nucia into a vehicle.
After detecting a significant increase in thefts of avocado crops in the Marina Baixa last November, surveillance was stepped up and 'Operation Green Gold' was launched.
Police have since arrested one man, aged 46, and two women, aged 21 and 52-years-old, in connection with seven thefts and being part of a criminal organisation.
The three suspects are believed to have been operating for some time in other towns in the Marina Baixa, stealing a total of three tonnes of different avocado varieties, and the case has been handed over to Villajoyosa Court of Instruction.
The Guardia Civil in Callosa d'En Sarria is continuing to work with colleagues in Calpe, and the Local Police of Callosa and La Nucia to prevent and combat the theft of avocados in the area through patrols and inspections.
Last July, six people were investigated over the theft of 1.5 tonnes of avocados; and three months earlier, three people were arrested in connection with the theft of three tonnes of the fruit.
Down the coast in Murcia last week, a suspect who had robbed 320kg of artichokes led police on a dangerous high-speed chase to get away.
