Alicante considers extending beach lifeguards due to longer summers
Tourism bosses think it would be “ideal” to have lifeguards on all Alicante beaches until November
Alicante’s Indian summer shows no signs of letting up and with temperatures still touching 30ºC, the beaches are packed with locals and tourists soaking up the last of the heat. As a result, Alicante City Council has set its sights on extending beach lifeguard services well into the autumn – but not until next year.
As it stands, the current contracts expired in mid-September and at the moment, lifeguards are focusing on two of Alicante’s busiest beaches: Postiguet and one half of San Juan. But even this is just at weekends and on holidays.
However, climate change experts are in agreement that the summers are only going to get longer, so Tourism Councillor Ana Poquet wants to review beach safety for the next high season.
“It is an issue that will be considered because summer lasts longer, it is an existing demand. The current contract has now been fulfilled, but we are going to review it for next season. Extending it to the entire month of October would be ideal because the temperatures are summer-like,” she said this week.
The lifeguards themselves are very much in favour of extending the beach surveillance period and a spokesperson pointed out that last weekend, there were more bathers in San Juan than would normally been seen on a July or August weekday.
If these changes are to be implemented, it will necessitate major reworking of the existing contracts which have remained more or less the same since 2021. Under the current agreement, lifeguards are only on duty full time, that is, between 10am and 8pm, Monday to Sunday, between June 1 and September 15.
