ARCHIVED - Alicante approves emergency 2 million euro aid for Ukraine
Five minutes of silence was observed outside Alicante Provincial Council as a show of support for the besieged country
Alicante Provincial Council has approved emergency aid of two million euros to assist the humanitarian efforts in Ukraine following the invasion of Russia.
The financial aid, which will come from residual funds, will cover grants to NGOs and International Cooperation Agencies for Emergency and Post-Emergency Humanitarian Aid, such as the Red Cross, UNHCR and Caritas, amongst others assisting Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war.
The budget amendment must first be given the green light in an extraordinary plenary session scheduled for Monday March 14 in order to authoritse the use of the provincial council's surplus funds.
"We are accelerating the administrative process so that this aid arrives as soon as possible because the Ukrainian people can not wait for red tape," explained the president of the provincial council, Carlos Mazón, who stressed, "we must help in absolutely any way we can".

In addition to financial aid, the council has also made "all facilities" available to humanitarian organisations, including Alicante Provincial Home, a social and reception centre, "in case they are needed to receive the refugees".
In another show of support to besieged Ukraine and the thousands of victims of Russia's invasion, council officials and employees observed five minutes of silence at the gates of the Provincial Palace on Wednesday March 9.
Meanwhile, the Valencian Government has set up three official logistics centres to collect vital donations from across the three provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón.
The public can donate medical supplies and other essential items directly to their local councils which will then be transported to the appropriate centre.
And more than 2,000 hospital beds in the region have been made available for wounded Ukrainians, including almost 150 in Orihuela and Torrevieja.
