ARCHIVED - 82-year-old Dutch man dies off Playa del Arenal, Javea
Red Cross unable to save man who had a heart attack while snorkelling in the sea off the Alicante beach
An 82-year-old man from the Netherlands lost his life yesterday afternoon while swimming in the sea off the Playa del Arenal in Javea, in the Marina Alta area. The man was spotted by other people bathing in the area, who reported that he was face down in the water, in a diving position but not moving.
They quickly alerted lifeguards from the Red Cross to rescue him, but despite performing CPR they were unfortunately unable to save his life. It was later reported that the man had suffered a heart attack while snorkelling, and the incident was not due to any inclement weather or tidal conditions.
Last week, a young Finnish woman and Russian man lost their lives in the water off Cala de la Zorra, Torrevieja.
The Red Cross noted at the end of August that they had rescued 423 people from drowning in the province of Alicante. Now, even though the summer season is over, the Playa del Arenal beach will keep its lifeguard service every day until mid-October.
