ARCHIVED - Body of Finnish woman dragged from Torrevieja sea as rescuers search for missing Russian man
The pair had been swimming at La Zorra cove in the Vega Baja, Alicante province, when they disappeared
The Guardia Civil has recovered the body of a twenty-four-year-old Swedish woman off the coast of Torrevieja, and a twenty-three-year-old Russian man who also drowned.
Both bathers were declared missing at sea by the police and rescue services early Thursday afternoon, September 23, after several 112 calls from witnesses reporting two bodies in the water near La Zorra cove.
A large rescue operation was deployed, with a Guardia Civil helicopter supported by Salvamento Marítimo rescue service.
A few hours later, at 8.30pm, the woman’s lifeless body was recovered more than three kilometres south of the cove, in front of Punta Margalla promenade. The search continued for the missing man whose shoes were found nearby, until he was located floating lifeless among the rocks by the Cala de la Higuera and removed from the water just before 4.30pm.
According to eyewitnesses the pair were seen swimming at La Zorra cove hours earlier, a cliff area popular with bathers for jumping into the sea, but also considered to be dangerous “even without strong waves”.

It’s believed the woman may have become trapped, unable to get out of the sea due to the waves and rocks, and the man had tried to rescue her before they were both pulled under the water and vanished.
Earlier this month, a 78-year-old pensioner was fortunately saved from drowning by lifeguards and emergency services at Playa del Cura in Torrevieja.
CORRECTION: This article has been updated to reflect changing facts known about the situation as they come in. It was originally reported that the deceased woman was a thirty-year-old from Sweden, while she is now believed to be a twenty-four-year-old from Finland. The condition and age of the man, meanwhile, was originally reported as unknown, but this has now been changed since his body was recovered from the water off Cala de la Higuera.
