ARCHIVED - 66-year-old man seriously injured after being hit by tram in Denia
The incident caused almost two hours of delays on Tram L9, according to TRAM d'Alacant officials
A pedestrian has suffered serious head injuries after being run over by a tram in Denia.
The 66-year-old man was crossing the track in Avenida Joan Fuster when he was hit by a tram heading in the direction of Denia station at around 10.45am on Monday March 6.
According to witnesses, the victim was left lying unconscious on the ground with evident head trauma.
The Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) was alerted and sent a SAMU and a Basic Life Support (SVB) ambulance to the scene. Medics managed to stablise the injured pedestrian, who had regained consciousness, before he was rushed to Marina Alta de Dénia Hosptial in a serious condition.
There has been no update on his condition.
TRAM d'Alacant confirmed there were significant delays on Tram L9, with normal operation resumed by 12.30pm.
Line 9 between Calpe and Denia was only reopened in January after six years of track renovations, having been closed in July 2016 due to safety issues. The project saw urban tracks integrated, traffic lights placed at crossings and walls that previously enclosed the track were removed.
Tram workshops at Denia station were also renovated.
