ARCHIVED - 2-metre bastard snake found in Murcia garage
The Montpellier snake is mildly venomous but rarely bites humans
A 2.15-metre Montpellier snake, commonly known in Spanish as a “culebra bastarda” or “bastard snake”, was captured by officers of the Policía Local in Murcia on Wednesday after it was found in the garage of a building in the outlying rural district of Los Ramos, close to the boundary with the province of Alicante.
The snake was spotted by local primary school pupils and their parents, who immediately called the 092 local police number. After being captured it was taken to the Wildlife Recovery Centre of El Valle in the mountains not far south of the regional capital.
The Montpellier snake (Malpolon monspessulanus) is a mildly venomous species which is common throughout the Mediterranean, and usually weighs around 1.5 kilos. It feeds mainly on lizards and it is very rare for humans to be affected by its bite as the fangs are at the rear of the mouth.
