ARCHIVED - 19-million-euro makeover of Torrevieja Port will start in March
The multi-million-euro project will regenerate the Vega Baja town's fish market and create a new leisure centre with cinema, bowling alley and hotel
The multi-million-euro plans to transform Torrevieja Port into a leisure centre whilst regenerating the fishing area have been given the go-ahead.
The project looks set to become a reality with an overall budget of 19 million euros, of which 10.5 million has been privately invested by local firm Emprases del Sol which will project manage. The rest is being funded by the Town Hall and work is expected to start in March with a view to completion in 2023.
The ambitious redevelopment will convert the port into a commercial and leisure area connected to the town via an elevated promenade incorporating viewpoints with stunning sea views.
A new access route will run through the centre of the port, replacing the existing one, creating a "continuous esplanade of 49,000 m2 for hosting events, open-air concerts and exhibitions".
The new complex will include six two-storey buildings with further viewpoints and open public spaces and shops, bars, restaurants, a hotel and an underground car park for 600 vehicles.
There will also be a cinema, bowling alley and other recreational activities.
Meanwhile, Lonja fish market will benefit from a new harbourside, at a cost of more than 1.5 million euros to regenerate the local fishing industry.
"The existing road in Avenida de la Libertad will disappear, converting the whole area into a pedestrian platform - with the possibility of creating some space for service and emergency vehicles - where local artisans will be located," explained the Town Hall.
A roundabout will be built at the entrance to the port and there will new public transport links.
Work will begin on the new fish market in March, with a view to unveiling the public, commercial and leisure centre in 2023.
