ARCHIVED - 1.3 million vaccines destined for Costa Blanca tourist areas next month
The roll-out of the region's vaccination campaign will be ramped up in tourist destinations such as Benidorm in the Marina Baixa comarca, Alicante province.
June will be "key" in the vaccination process across the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellon, where 1.3 million doses will be administered to "reinforce areas with the greatest tourist influx".
Hiring is already underway to strengthen the team of 6,500 health personnel responsible for immunising, to try to vaccinate a minimum of 55 per cent of region with at least the first dose by the end of June.
"The 500 new hires to reinforce the health personnel for this summer will be mainly directed to Primary Care and Emergency Care departments in tourist areas," said the regional government.
And it's hoped the reinforced teams - part of an investment of €140 million - will enable 30 per cent of the region's population to be fully immunised before July, with 1.7 million having already received their first jab.
Of the total investment, €64 million is designed to "activate the vacation and summer reinforcement plan within the popular tourist areas", up €1.9 million on last year.
Valencia's Tourist Department estimates that the opening of borders and the recovery of international travel could mean the arrival of more than two million tourists from other countries between June and September, "more than twice as many as last year."
As for domestic tourism, the forecast is to exceed last year's figures by 500,000 and reach almost 7 million visitors to the Costa Blanca from within Spanish territory.
Travellers are still being warned against flying to Spain by the UK government, and the country will remain on its amber list until at least June 7, but they are returning in their thousands after Spain lifted travel restrictions.
