ARCHIVED - 10 million-euro redevelopment of Benidorm bull ring a step closer to becoming a reality
European funds have been secured to go ahead with the Plaza de Toros project in the Marina Baixa resort, Alicante province
Ambitious plans to transform Benidorm's old bullring in Plaza de Toros at a cost of 10 million euros are set to become a reality.
In recent years, the 60-year-old building has been predominantly used to host concerts and other events, although its deteriorating condition prompted a 2018 report which advised against using the structure for large public events due to safety concerns.
Now, the bullring is set to be transformed into a multicultural and multifunctional venue for a huge variety of events and activities partly funded by the Town Hall and European Regional Development Funds.
An artist's impression of the impressive design shows the scale of the development which will include a renovation of the former bullring arena and steps, and house an exhibition hall, a youth centre, study space and meeting rooms.
The project is part of Benidorm's Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) which is composed of "a series of thematic, specific, strategic and operational objectives, encompassed through 13 lines of action".
"Actions such as the future hostel and Interpretation Centre of the Séquia Mare or the cultural complex of the Plaza de Toros are examples of these urban regeneration projects," explained Benidorm Mayor, Toni Pérez.
An exhibition detailing the Town Hall's plans is on display at the SSMM Los Reyes de España square in Benidorm until May 18.
