ARCHIVED - Rogue fishermen illegally reel in bluefin tuna off coast of Alicante province
The illegally caught tuna was seized by police at ports in Altea and Villajoyosa in the Alicante province.
ROGUE fishermen illegally reeled in at least four bluefin tuna and had planned to sell them on to restaurants at a knocked down price from ports in Altea and Villajoyosa, both in the comarca of Marina Baixa, on the Costa Blanca, before police caught up with them.
Fishing of bluefin tuna is currently banned, only allowed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food at certain times of the year when authorised vessels are allocated a quota.
But in the last few days, the Provincial Maritime Service (SMP) of Alicante's Guardia Civil has seized four bluefin tuna (Thunnus Thynnus) at the two ports, each weighing around 70 kilos each.
According to police, the fish had been cut up in the boats to try to hide them from possible detection by the authorities.
"Normally, the fish is quickly sold to a local restaurant who buys it at a price much lower than the legal market price of around €50 per kilo, with the detriment of not knowing its origin, as well as the lack of any type of sanitary control," explained the Guardia Civil.
The offenders have been denounced for a serious infringement of maritime laws and could be fined up to €60,000.
The seized fish was checked over and after passing quality controls was donated to a local food bank.
