€5.2 million flood prevention works planned across Murcia and Alicante
Three Murcia companies have been awarded contracts to carry out preventive work across the four provinces covered by the Segura basin

With heavy rain and flash flooding capable of causing serious problems across south-east Spain, more than €5.2 million is being invested in measures designed to tackle potential trouble spots before the water starts rising.
The Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) has awarded five contracts covering the Region of Murcia, Alicante, Almería and Albacete, with work aimed at reducing flood risks throughout the Segura river basin.
The programme will involve some very practical jobs, including clearing waterways of vegetation and other debris, removing blockages and repairing drainage systems. Crews will also work on riverbanks damaged by erosion and carry out emergency measures when water levels become particularly high.
There are plans to restore vegetation along riverbanks too, as well as make improvements that should help water move more effectively through the area's waterways.
The contracts are worth a combined €5,257,740.91 including taxes and will initially run for one year, with the possibility of renewal.
The biggest share of the work is in the Region of Murcia, where Eneas has been awarded a contract worth almost €2.6 million.
The CHS explained that the programme is designed to improve the management of waterways and reduce the risk posed by flooding, with the ultimate aim of protecting people, homes and businesses as well as the natural environment.
For communities across the Segura basin, the work is particularly relevant because clearing waterways and dealing with damaged riverbanks before extreme weather arrives can help prevent relatively small problems from becoming much bigger ones when heavy rainfall hits.
