ARCHIVED - Would-be armed bank robber arrested in Albatera
The middle-aged man tried to hold up a Sabadell branch at gunpoint in the Vega Baja town before barricading himself in a Mercadona supermarket

The Guardia Civil have arrested a middle-aged man who tried to rob a Sabadell bank in Albatera at gunpoint before barricading himself in a Mercadona supermarket.
According to eyewitnesses, the would-be bank robber entered the branch on Tuesday morning, January 27, and joined the queue along with other customers.
When it was his turn, he immediately pointed a gun at the member of staff and demanded she fill a bag he was carrying with cash.
The employee explained that, for security reasons, she did not have any money and other workers were forced to open the drawers to prove this was the case.
The detainee fled the scene on a bicycle and "barricaded" himself in a nearby Mercadona supermarket, while one of the cashiers back at the bank managed to press an alarm button to notify the police.
The Guardia Civil and Local Police officers were quickly on the scene and after searching the local area, soon found the suspect in the supermarkt and arrested him.
