ARCHIVED - Work begins on long-awaited indoor swimming pool in Javea
After years of public calls for a new pool in the Marina Alta area of Alicante province, phase one of the project in underway
Work has finally begun on Javea’s new 4.6-million-euro municipal indoor swimming pool to improve the town’s sports facilities and meet demands from the public and sports clubs.
Contractors have this week begun installing fencing at the sports complex between calles M Bordes Valls, Joan Fuster and Vicent A Estellés, and over the next few days and weeks, walls will be demolished and the area will be excavated before foundations are laid.
Javea Council has assured there will be no traffic restrictions, but that “parking will be affected at the front of what will be the swimming pool, something that has been clearly signposted.”
The new facility, for which 3 million euros of funding has come from the Valencian government, will be approved to hold provincial competitions and will be the first pool in Spain with BREAM certification of environmental sustainability.
In terms of design, on the first floor, there will be two pools – one for competition and adult activities and the other for warm-up and children's activities – and four changing rooms, two of which will be adapted for wheelchair users.
A spectator area and rooms for classes will be located on the second floor, and work is expected to take 26 weeks.
