ARCHIVED - Woman in Benidorm rescued after driving mobility scooter into the woods and falling off
The elderly scooter rider was discovered by runners in the well-known rural area of El Moralet in the Marina Baixa town, Alicante province
Benidorm firefighters were involved in a bizarre rescue after a woman on a mobility scooter drove into the woods before losing control of the vehicle and falling off in the El Moralet rural area of the resort.
It's believed the elderly woman became disoriented in the wooded area near the TRAM station, and fortunately for her, was spotted by a group of female runners who immediately raised the alarm.
A crew from Alicante Firefighters' Consortium, based at Benidorm Regional Park, together with Local Police officers were sent to the scene, a narrow and difficult to access dirt path close to the recently remodelled urban park.

With the help of the runners, rescuers, who had by this time been joined by FGV security staff from the nearby TRAM station, reached the woman who was laying helplessly on the ground. It's not clear whether the lady is a holidaymaker or resident.
This is the latest in a long list of incidents involving mobility scooters in Benidorm, a popular mode of transport amongst holidaymakers, particularly the British.
On the one hand, these vehicles allow elderly people and those with reduced mobility to get around the resort without being limited by their physical barriers, but at the same time, there has been a steady rise in accidents and other incidents involving electric scooters.
In August, a 58-year-old British woman on a scooter plunged off a cliff in the Serra Gelada and died. The victim's eight-year-old grandson, who was also on the vehicle, was seriously injured.
And over the summer months, Benidorm Council opened more than 300 disciplinary proceedings for the misuse of electric wheelchairs and scooters on the town's streets.
