ARCHIVED - Woman dies after being pulled unconscious from the sea in Villajoyosa
Lifeguards tried in vain to revive the bather who died at a beach in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province.
A woman has tragically died after being pulled unconscious from the sea at a beach in Villajoyosa.
The Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) was notified that a bather, whose age has not been given, was rescued by beach lifeguards at around 6pm on Tuesday, July 13, but was unresponsive with symptoms of drowning.
The woman's rescuers carried out basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, without success and once a SAMU medical team arrived, they continued with advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other resuscitation techniques, but there was no response and the woman died at the scene.
A post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of the drowning.
There were 10 drownings in the Alicante province in June, around two a week, prompting a warning from the Valencia region's Health Emergencies Service (SES) to only swim when there are lifeguards on duty, to avoid over exertion in the summer heat and bathing alone or after drinking alcohol.
