ARCHIVED - Wet and windy start to an unstable week in Alicante
95km winds recorded at Alicante-Elche Airport on Monday morning, January 10
Wind and rain is forecast across Alicante province and much of the rest of the Valencian region today (Monday January 10) and tomorrow, accompanied by a drop in temperatures.
Whilst winds of 95km per hour were recorded at Alicante-Elche Airport at around 8am this morning, and 75km in Javea, average temperatures are expected to maintain highs of 23 degrees Celsius on the coast of Alicante and 19 degrees further inland today, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
But the agency predicts an "unstable week with significant changes" from tomorrow, when the Mercury is expected to fall to 14 degrees in coastal areas, and 10 degrees in the interior of the province.
And Tuesday looks set to be decidedly wet, with a 70% risk of rain.
According to Jorge Olcina, director of the Climatology Laboratory of the University of Alicante, "there will be an easterly wind laden with humidity on Tuesday, and it may rain, although at first only lightly" which demonstrates the current "anticyclonic situation" - a weather phenomenon defined as a large-scale circulation of winds around a central region of high atmospheric pressure.
Conditions over the remainder of the week will be determined by the movement of this anticyclone which is expected to end up located in the centre of Europe, resulting in a mass of colder air and cloud over the coast of the Valencia region with little or no rain.
