ARCHIVED - Weekend hospital admissions rise as infections fall: Valencia Covid update January 31
88 seriously ill Covid patients admitted to hospitals in Alicante province and the rest of the region in three days

After three weeks of record-high weekend Covid cases in the Valencia region, the figures have fallen with the regional Ministry of Health reporting 23,166 new infections since Friday January 28.
But whilst new cases have dropped, pressure on the region's hospitals has increased with an additional 88 patients admitted over the weekend, although there are 13 fewer critical patients in ICU, and the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has reached 4,359 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
In a bid to speed up the booster jab rollout in the region, mass vaccination centres were reopened on Monday January 31, including a field site next to Alicante General Hospital where an average of 50 health staff plan to immunise 4,000 people a day.
"During this first week we will be inoculating doses to the 30 to 39 age group and progress until we reach 18-year-olds, in addition to the re-uptake of third doses in other age groups," explained Director of Primary Care, Inés Montiel, adding that "it's hoped the process will be completed within a month".
Appointments are being sent by SMS, so anybody under the age of 60 who has still not been fully jabbed is advised to periodically check if they have received a message.
Coronavirus cases
The regional Ministry of Health has reported 23,166 new Covid cases over the weekend, significantly lower than the record 57,607 infections reported last Monday January 24. This brings the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,119,435.
By province: 2,689 have been recorded in Castellón (139,555 in total), 8,706 in Alicante (398,320) and 11,771 in Valencia (581,557).. There are three unassigned cases.
According to the health data, there are currently 203,537 active cases, which represent 18% of the total positives.

37,644 people have overcome the virus since the last update, which means the total number of recoveries since the start of the pandemic now stands at 918,811.
By provinces, the recoveries are distributed as follows: 110,436 in Castellón, 330,963 in Alicante and 477,355 in Valencia. There are 57 unassigned cases.
