ARCHIVED - Wave of catalytic converter thefts in Petrer
Similar robberies have been reported in nearby Alicante towns
Local Police in the Alicante town of Petrer are on high alert after several thefts of valuable catalytic converters have been reported in recent weeks. The authorities believe that an organised criminal gang may be responsible for the robberies since specific tools are required to remove the part from vehicles, although on a few occasions the pieces have been clumsily pulled off by hitching them to another car.
The theft of catalytic converters is big business; each part can be readily sold on the black market to obtain platinum, palladium and chrome, all highly valuable precious metals.

Upon investigation, the Police have established that similar robberies have taken place in neighbouring towns and have asked residents to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
"In the face of any suspicion, we must sound the alarm by calling our checkpoint or directly at 112," advised the Chief Commissioner of the Local Police, Antonio Amorós.
The catalytic converter is a vehicle part that produces chemical modifications in the exhaust gases of cars before releasing them into the atmosphere with the aim of reducing the proportion of some harmful gases – mainly carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides – that are formed in the combustion process.
