ARCHIVED - Watch: Motorist drives 35km along AP7 Alicante in the wrong direction
Another driver crashed in an attempt to avoid the oncoming car in Altea
The Guardia Civil's traffic unit is on the hunt for the driver of a car captured travelling more than 35km in the wrong direction on the AP7 through the Marina Alta and Marina Baixa areas of Alicante province on Sunday January 9.
Footage of the bizarre and extremely dangerous moment, filmed by a motorist in the opposite lane of the motorway, has been shared on Twitter and police are now trying to determine whether the incident was a deliberate "kamikaze" stunt or a genuine driver's error.
The first of many emergency calls was received shortly before 1.30pm, one of which reported the car heading towards oncoming traffic at kilometre 604 of the AP7.

Just 15 minutes later, a car was involved in an accident at kilometre 639 in Altea, after trying to avoid a vehicle travelling in the wrong direction towards Alicante.
Fortunately, the driver was unhurt, but the dangerously driven car had already left the AP7 before responding officers could intercept the vehicle.
The Guardia Civil's Investigation and Analysis Group (GIAT) has taken over the case to locate the car and its driver.
