VIDEO: Plumes of smoke from Canada wildfire visible across Spain
The smoke crossed the Atlantic and appeared as a dense haze in several parts of Spain
Spain work up to somewhat ‘cloudy’ and ‘foggy’ skies in much of the country on Monday August 19, leading many to believe that the calima – fine Saharan dust particles – had drifted across to the mainland from the Canary Islands.
But it was nothing of the sort. In fact, rather incredibly, the hazy skies were caused by the massive forest fires that are devouring the countryside in Canada – all the way on the other side of the Atlantic.
So far this month, more than 428 wildfires have broken out in British Columbia and it’s not unusual for the dense smoke to affect cities like New York and New Jersey. However, people were stunned when these plumes managed to not only cross the American borders, but an ocean too, to create what appeared to be a dense fog in many parts of Spain.
According to meteorologists, atmospheric circulation, which distributes heat and humidity across the planet, helped disperse the smoke from the forest fires.

These atmospheric currents in the middle and upper layers are what caused the particles from the devastating wildfires ravaging Canada to reach Spain on Monday. The effect that this phenomenon has on our sky is very similar to that caused by haze, which is why it created so much confusion and resulted in umpteen shocked social media posts.
However, the experts were quick to point out that the safety of people in Spain wasn’t in question, as the particle concentrations haven’t impacted the air quality here in any way.
The northeast of Spain bore the brunt of the murky atmosphere, the Ebro Valley and Catalonia mainly, but the smoky skies were also very apparent in the Valencian Community, Madrid, the Balearic Islands, Navarra and Catalonia.
