VIDEO: Cabo de Palos, Los Nietos and La Azohia celebrate curious virgin boat procession
The Cartagena towns marked the Virgin Mary’s feast day by taking their religious icons out on the water

This Tuesday August 15, for the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a very special kind of religious ceremony was held along the coast of Cartagena as icons of the ‘Virgen del Mar’, the Virgin of the Sea, were taken by boat around Cabo de Palos, La Azohía and Los Nietos.
From the water’s edge, hundreds of visitors and locals watched the procession of the Virgen del Mar de Cabo de Palos, a tradition that is now over 100 years old.

After a special mass in the parish church, the image of the Virgin was carried down to the boat which would take her, with a phalanx of fishing boats and pleasure boats all beeping their horns loudly, around the southern Murcia coastline.
One of the most emotional moments of the day came during the annual tribute to deceased sailors.
What’s more, this year the local fiestas were extended with the traditional ‘moraga de sardinas’, preceded by a floral offering from the Neighbourhood Association.

Los Nietos also held their own maritime virginal procession when the Virgen de la Asunción departed from the parish of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, accompanied by a brass band, down to the Yacht Club, where it was sailed by boat along the Mar Menor.
Boats also sailed with the La Purísima virgin through the waters of La Azohía to the hermitage of Isla Plana, which hosted yet another of the religious acts in honour of the Feast of the Assumption.
