ARCHIVED - Valencia records wettest May day since 1871
Officers in the Valencian Community raced to 200 call-outs due to the torrential rain

Tuesday May 3 has received the dubious award of being the single wettest May day since 1871 in the city of Valencia, where 200 litres/m2 of rain fell between midnight and 10.40pm, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). The last date where the area came even close to that record was on May 25 1871, when 92.7 litres of rain were recorded.
There’s no guarantee that this impressive record won’t be broken, however, as the wet weather doesn’t show signs of clearing up anytime soon.
The storms have kept the Local Police on their toes, and members of the fire department received almost 200 call-outs on Tuesday night to rescue people from the downpour drenching the capital and surrounding localities.
In fact, in less than two hours – between 8pm and 9.42pm – officers responded to 94 emergency calls as the deluge completely cut off access to the Hermanos Machado tunnels, and even the trains were affected, as Metrovalencia reported disruptions between the Empalme and Lliria stations and between Alboraia-Peris Arago and Refelbunyol.
The vast majority of call-outs were in response to people becoming trapped on flooded roads.
