ARCHIVED - Valencia region to scrap mandatory Covid passport from March 1
The anti-Covid measure is no longer deemed necessary due to the "favourable evolution of the pandemic" in Alicante and the rest of the region

The Covid passport will no longer be compulsory to enter bars, restaurants and other public spaces in the Valencia region from March 1.
Regional President Ximo Puig announced on Friday February 11 that he believes the Covid passport "is no longer necessary" due to the favourable evolution of the pandemic in the region.
The move comes hot on the heels of the scrapping of mask-wearing outdoors across Spain from last Thursday February 10.
"If things continue to go the way they are going, we will continue to see a massive decrease in the number of infections. We are doing well and the government's intention is that there will be no restrictions beyond the necessary time," said Puig.
The sixth wave of the pandemic, fuelled by the highly contagious Omicron variant, saw an explosion of new cases, accompanied by a rise in hospital admissions and fatalities.
But the trajectory has taken a turn over the last 10 days, with a significant slide in new infections which has seen the 14-day cumulative incidence fall to 2,138 cases per 100,000 - still very high but a far cry from a rate teetering around the 3,800 mark a fortnight ago.
The majority of autonomous communities in Spain adopted a Covid passport system last November to try to stem the transmission of the virus in enclosed spaces.
As such, the public has been required to provide proof of vaccination, a negative test or having recovered from coronavirus to enter bars, restaurants, gyms, cinemas, and for hospital and elderly residence visits.
But whilst many communities ditched the anti-Covid measure in January, the Valencia region, along with Andalucia, extended the requirement twice.
