US embassy in Spain forces suppliers to reject diversity policies
The embassy staff in Madrid have been made to require that companies it works with do not violate US anti-discrimination laws

The United States embassy in Spain has introduced a new requirement for its commercial suppliers, demanding that they certify they do not apply internal diversity and inclusion policies that could be deemed as violating US anti-discrimination laws.
This controversial measure, reported by Spanish paper El Confidencial, applies only to operations subject to US law or to companies operating within the United States.
Suppliers have been given just five days to provide written certification of compliance. Failure to do so could result in the suspension of payments from the embassy. This requirement extends beyond Spain, affecting all countries that maintain diplomatic relations with the United States.
According to El Confidencial, this move stems from executive orders issued by US President Donald Trump, which seek to curb diversity and inclusion initiatives. The directive clashes with Spanish laws that mandate equality and LGTBI plans for companies with more than 50 employees, presenting something of a legal and ideological conflict.
Spanish companies that provide services exclusively within Spain are not directly subject to this requirement. However, those operating under US jurisdiction or with business in the US must comply, raising concerns about how they can reconcile this demand with European regulations.
The US embassy in Spain has declined to comment on the matter. Meanwhile, affected companies are reportedly evaluating their options to navigate these conflicting legal frameworks.
