ARCHIVED - Ukrainian refugee families robbed as they slept in an Alicante host hotel
Police in Alicante have arrested a 22-year-old man after two rooms in which Ukrainian families slept were broken into
Two of 27 Ukrainian families offered refuge at a host hotel in Alicante and assistance from the Red Cross after fleeing their besieged home country were robbed as they slept in their beds on Saturday May 14.
The suspect, a 22-year-old who has since been arrested, allegedly entered both rooms at Hotel Daniya in Avenida de Denia via external windows just after 4.30am as the victims, two women and their children, slept.
The thief initially entered the first room undetected and stole a tablet, mobile phone and the woman's purse with about 150 euros and 700 Czech crowns, bank cards and other personal effects inside.
According to police sources, he left the room through the same window and managed to force the window to a second room where a woman and her daughter were sleeping.
Wearing just socks, presumably to avoid making a noise, the thief grabbed two mobiles before the mother woke up "to see a man climbing out of the window and started to scream".
The screams alerted other guests who quickly learned what had happened. Several people left the hotel and, together with a passing taxi driver, called the police and began searching the area. The suspect hadn't gone very far having left a backpack with his shoes and identification inside underneath a car parked close to the hotel.
The 22-year-old was arrested and all of the stolen items were recovered, with the exception of the cash leading police to believe he had an accomplice.
The 27 families are housed under a government program for Ukrainian refugees overseen by the Red Cross (Cruz Roja).
