Uber taxis finally land in Alicante Airport
30 new private cabs now operate at Alicante-Elche Airport
Each and every summer complaints abound about the vast shortage of taxis available to collect incoming passengers from Alicante-Elche Airport, and this year is no exception. The problem seems to be worse in the evenings, with queues more than a hundred people deep and illegal cabbies are doing a roaring trade.
But the government has finally listened, and private transport company Uber began operating at Alicante airport on Wednesday June 26, complementing the blue-plated cabs already in place from Elche.
In total, 40 Uber licences have been issued – 10 cars will offer service exclusively in the city and the other 30 will work at the airport. It’s not a huge number, but it will certainly take the pressure off.
Elche City Council explains that Uber “complements the existing taxi service, which is currently made up of 204 vehicles, 21 of which are adapted. In addition, the 24 new licenses requested will be added shortly.”
Announcing this long overdue taxi service, Mayor Pablo Ruiz hinted that this is only the beginning of improvements to the municipality’s services.
“A city that wants to be a tourist reference must offer the best transportation service to Elche residents and visitors,” he said.
“A city that has three World Heritage Sites, virgin beaches, the La Alcudia site, hospitality establishments and restaurants of national reference, had to give a quick and effective response so that Elche is in the place it deserves.”
Furthermore, he has assured that “a new stage of mobility in the city now begins.”
The company began operating for the first time in 2019, when Uber arrived in Madrid, followed by Málaga, Barcelona and Valencia in 2021, and Mallorca, Tenerife, Zaragoza and Ibiza in 2023. There’s still no sign of this service on the southern Costa Blanca, one of Alicante’s most popular tourist destinations and an area in desperate need of more public transport.
In order to catch an Uber from Alicante airport, passengers must first download the app, register and add a payment method. Once they log in and pick their destinations, customers will be given the final price of the trip in advance.
When a driver accepts the booking request, the app will show the waiting time until pickup and the vehicle and driver details.
