Tractor protests scheduled for the Orihuela Costa on Feb 16
The demonstration will block the A-7 in Orihuela as well as the A-31 in Villena
On Friday February 16, several groups representing farmers will stage protests in Orihuela and Villena to draw attention to the struggles faced by workers in these areas. The demonstrations will involve blocking two major motorways, the A-7 leading to the Orihuela Costa and the A-31 in Alto Vinalopó.
This mass protest joins hundreds of others organised throughout Spain during the month of February and intends to highlight the challenges faced by agricultural communities, particularly those affected by low prices, unfair competition and drought.
Initially, the protests were planned for February 12, but were rescheduled to allow for the necessary authorisation from the Government Subdelegation. The events are supported by agri-food cooperatives in the Valencian Community and have been organised in collaboration with local farmers' associations.
Meanwhile, spontaneous mobilisations have been taking place throughout the Valencian Community, with farmers using social media and messaging apps to coordinate their efforts. For example, a group of 70 tractors recently blocked roads in Albatera and Orihuela, and another protest has been planned from 10am on Wednesday February 14 between the La Granadilla industrial estate in San Isidro and the municipality of Rojales.
