ARCHIVED - Torrevieja police warn motorists of new eye in the sky DGT drones
From July 2, 39 drones will monitor traffic offences from above in the Vega Baja, Alicante province, and across Spain.
Spain's Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is unleashing additional drones to monitor traffic offences from the sky this summer, with Torrevieja police issuing a warning to motorists on the Vega Baja.
Urging motorists to be extra careful and mindful of the law when driving, Torrevieja police has shared an alert from the municipality's emergency department, which explained the drones will not be used to monitor speeding offences, but will focus on seatbelt wearing, mobile use and motorists who jump traffic lights or skip 'stop' signs.
"This element of surveillance is one of the most used in recent times and is gaining in importance. The advancement of technology allows this simple and easy-to-manage system to control Spanish roads and motorways."
Drones are predominantly used to support traffic monitoring and management on the country's roads, but as part of Operation Exit 2021, they will be tasked with "policing behaviours that put us all at risk".
At any given time, the unmanned devices circulate in a radius of about 500 metres, and can record activity on the roads for up to one kilometre in distance, giving them a bird's eye view of what's going on inside vehicles, thanks to HD cameras, from altitudes of 120 metres.
Anybody captured not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile, jumping traffic lights or skipping a 'stop' sign, will be fined €200.
