ARCHIVED - Torrevieja dog dies after being tied up on a rooftop in the sun for three days without water
Police and officials are accused of a failure to take decisive action to save the suffering animal

On August 17, a member of the Association for the Defence of Animals in Torrevieja (ADAT) made an official complaint to Guardia Civil police of a crime of animal abuse that took place in the town.
The case involves the appalling story of a dog that was tied up on the roof of a house without food or water for three days, between August 17 and 20.
The association contacted the Town Council, specifically the councillor for Animal Protection, Concha Sala, who informed the local police of the municipality. A day later, a patrol went to the house where the dog was tied up on the roof.
The owner of the house assured officers that “everything was fine”, and the dog was left on the roof.

In the meantime, it sweltered and suffered in the boiling midday heat, and in the end, the dog died on August 20. Torrevieja Town Hall will now perform a necropsy to determine the cause of death before cremating the animal.
It’s not clear why the owner left the dog up there on its own, knowing that it would most likely perish under the hot sun without any water, nor is it clear why police failed to intervene after being warned of the situation.
ADAT maintains that “the failure has been of the system because neither the Police nor the Town Hall has done everything it could have done” to save the dog and that “in this case the problem has been that the protocol has not been carried out correctly”.
