ARCHIVED - Torrential rain leads to widespread weekend damage and flooding in Alicante
Alicante province remains on orange alert for heavy rain on Monday September 26

Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong gusts of wind took their toll on Alicante province at the weekend, leading to flooding and structural damage.
Alicante firefighters and other emergency services were stretched as downpours and fierce winds felled dozens of trees and caused riverbanks to burst, leading to flooding and traffic accidents with people trapped in cars.
The most rain fell in the Alicante town on Pego in the Marina Alta region, where 131.2 liters per square metre was recorded in four hours.

In Alicante, strong winds blew out a large window which fell to the ground from the 12th floor of a building in Playa de San Juan on Sunday September 25. The building is currently under construction and miraculously, nobody was hurt in the freak incident which forced the closure of the street to pedestrians and traffic for several hours.
Three Alicante Fire fire crews made up of 14 firefighters were quickly on the scene to reinforce the façade and prevent further damage whilst several Local Police patrols supervised and kept the area clear of people and vehicles. The road was reopened by Sunday evening.
Elsewhere, torrential rain and fierce winds left one man injured in Petrer and caused traffic interruptions in Elda and extensive damage in Novelda. And in Elche, Sunday's football match against Orihuela was suspended due to an intense rainstorm.
¡Diluvio!

In the Alto and Medio Vinalopó regions of the province, the accumulated rainfall reached almost 40 litres per square metre in half an hour on Friday. River embankments burst, walls and branches toppled and there were several landslides on regional roads leading to road closures.
As is often the case, torrential rains dislodged manholes, and a man in Petrer was hurt after his leg became lodged up to the groin in one of them. He suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to a nearby hospital where he received further treatment for the non-life-threatening injuries.
