ARCHIVED - Torrential rain in Valencia province causes further flooding
Two municipalities in the Valencia province were inundated with around 180 l/m2 of rainfall in just a few hours
Flooding in the Castellón coastal resort of Benicassim on Sunday August 29 was followed by torrential rain in some parts of Valencia on Monday August 30, causing further flooding in Sagunt and Canet d’En Berenguer.
Up to 180 l/m2 of rainwater fell in the municipalities of Sagunt and Canet in the early hours of Monday morning and firefighters were called to rescue residents and vehicles and cut off several roads.
The N-340 had to be closed at the entrance to Sagunt as well as the road from Puçol to this municipality, preventing anyone from entering the town. Meanwhile in Canet, the Policía Local had to close two roads to the public, as well as the beach promenade, which was completely inundated.
The authorities also had to stop buses between Sagunt and Puçol, in the north of the Valencia province, from running (lines C5 and C6) until the rain subsided.
This incredible amount of rainwater, which fell in just a few hours, caused severe damage to some roads in the municipalities, as well as flooding in private basements and garages. The emergency services are now working to make the roads safe again and drainage teams are helping residents to empty their homes of water, but more rain is expected to hit the region throughout the week.
