ARCHIVED - Three days of mourning in Villajoyosa following murder-suicide
A woman was reportedly killed by her husband of 40 years who then committed suicide in the Marina Baixa municipality, Alicante province
Villajoyosa Council held a minute's silence attended by police and members of the public on Tuesday September 14, and has declared three days of mourning following a tragic murder-suicide a day earlier.
In a statement, the local authority expressed its rejection of the macho murder" in Villajoyosa, in which a man and father-of-three, 52, slit his forty-year-old wife's throat before throwing himself off a bridge.
The victim is the first woman to die at the hands of a husband, partner or ex in Alicante province this year, and the second in the Valencia region.
"Faced with the macho murder perpetrated against a woman in our municipality, we express our most absolute condemnation and rejection of this crime, as well as our most sincere support and affection to the family of the victim, putting at their disposal all the psychological, legal, health, protection and municipal shelter resources they require," the statement added.
It goes on to stress that gender violence is a "serious violation of human rights", and a social problem that "undermines the dignity and physical and moral integrity, mainly of women who suffer and face it".
The council has pledged to promote measures to "respond immediately and forcefully to any male aggression" and provide women with resources that enable them to seek help.
In addition to a minute's silence, municipal building flags in Villajoyosa will fly at half mast until Thursday September 16.
