ARCHIVED - Three arrested over spate of house burglaries in Alicante towns
The detainees are suspected of breaking into at least 10 homes in Pedregeur and Ondara
The Guardia Civil in Alicante have made three key arrests in connection with a spate of burglaries in Pedreguer and Ondara, causing "great alarm" amongst residents.
In total, the trio is accused of five counts of fraud and 10 burglaries, two of which occurred when elderly occupants were at home.
According to police sources, wherever possible, the suspects targeted elderly victims "taking advantage of their dependency and vulnerability".
Operation Furtondara began in mid-December last year following a break-in at a home in Ondara. The victim reportedly heard noises and witnessed the alleged perpetrators leaving the house before calling the police and giving a good description of the suspects.
Several reports of similar burglaries were subsequently made in Pedreguer, the latest of which took place on February 3, and following "exhaustive analysis of the data", detectives linked the break-ins and stolen goods to gold pawn shops in Denia and Ondara.
Inspections of these shops recovered around 25 pieces of stolen jewellery and gold watches, along with silver coins, and the majority of the items were returned to their rightful owners.
As the investigation progressed, police searched the suspect's homes in Pederegeur and seized around 60 items, including mobile phones, jewellery, sound equipment, a compressed air rifle and several internet devices.
Police have not ruled out the possibility that the detainees may have been involved in other burglaries and robberies and the probe is ongoing.
All three have appeared before the courts in Denia and were released with charges.
