ARCHIVED - Alicante city police continue to battle weekend botellones
80 'offenders' fined for drinking in the street, parks and on the beach in Alicante city over the weekend

Police in Alicante have stepped up weekend surveillance to combat open-air gatherings of young people drinking in the street, known as botellones in Spanish. extending patrols to areas regularly frequented by young people armed with alcohol, including the Old Town and city centre.
Last weekend, evening police patrols also focused on the Playa de San Juan, Cabo de las Huertas, Alicante Golf Course, parks and landmarks such as Santa Barbara Castle, fining 80 people for consuming alcohol on a public highway.
In addition, a dozen people face fines for drug use or possession, with a further 16 sanctions for urinating in the street, littering, creating a noise nuisance and drink driving.
"Every weekend the Local Police are out on the streets preventing alcohol consumption and ensuring the safety of the people of Alicante, with excellent results to back them up," said Councillor for Safety, José Ramón González, adding that anyone caught consuming alcohol in any public area will be fined and the booze confiscated.
"We will not let our guard down and the Local Police will continue to work to eradicate these botellones which are prohibited with fixed and mobile surveillance, particularly at weekends".
