Three arrested over fatal attack on British pensioner in Tenerife
Policía Nacional confirm detentions following the death of an 88-year-old man who was mugged outside a Los Cristianos apartment complex
Three people have been arrested in connection with the violent attack that claimed the life of an elderly British tourist in one of Tenerife's most popular holiday resorts. The Policía Nacional confirmed the detentions on Wednesday June 24, with a statement saying the investigation "continues to progress."The man, known to friends as Ray, had been visiting Tenerife to celebrate his birthday with his wife when he was attacked outside the Victoria Court II apartment complex in Los Cristianos on Wednesday June 17. The suspects suspect violently targeted the couple in an attempt to steal his wife's handbag, during which Ray was knocked heavily to the ground, striking his head. He suffered a cardiac arrest at the scene and, despite the best efforts of medical staff, passed away on Saturday June 20.
The news of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from friends online. One wrote: "I met that man two weeks ago. He was celebrating his birthday with his wife Judy and having a great time. Such a lovely man. Can't believe this happened. Rest in peace."
Friend Ray Hugill, from Middlesbrough, added: "This should now be treated by the police as a murder inquiry."
At this stage, police have not released details about the identities or nationalities of those arrested, the charges they may face, or whether further arrests are expected. They have appealed for patience while the investigation remains active.
The case has attracted widespread attention both in the Canary Islands and in the UK, and has reignited concerns about the safety of elderly visitors in busy tourist resorts. Residents and regular visitors to Los Cristianos had already called for a stronger police presence in the area following the attack, with some suggesting that robberies targeting tourists have become an increasing problem in parts of the resort.
Flowers have been left outside the apartment block where the attack took place.
